the body remembers
Maryam Adib
11.4.22

The  body remembers is Maryam Adib’s first solo retrospective spanning her artistic career of large-scale figurative and portrait work. Using a process of layering paint with other materials on toned canvases, Adib explores layers of identity, consciousness, memory, and the passage of time. In her work, she explores how stories, trauma, wisdom, and spirit are passed down generationally and affect not only the individual, but the collective. Through these vignettes, Adib tells the joyous stories of overcoming.

Maryam Adib is an emerging multidisciplinary artist living and working in Ithaca, NY. She grew up in the Capital Region and studied painting at SUNY Cortland, graduating in 2020. Maryam works primarily in oil, acrylic, gouache, screen printing, and public art, with five original murals in Ithaca. In 2021, she received the Mona Brickman Artist of the Year Award, and she was recently awarded a Juried Residency at The Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts. In her work, she explores themes of racial consciousness, exploration of the self, memory, and the subconscious/conscious mind.
